Iris Drawing – A Step By Step Tutorial

Drawing an iris flower can be a lovely and artistic endeavor. Below is a step-by-step tutorial to help you draw a simple iris flower.

Step 1: Basic outline Begin by drawing a small circle in the center of your paper. This will be the center of the iris flower.

Step 2: Draw the petals Iris flowers typically have three large outer petals called "falls" and three smaller inner petals called "standards." Start by drawing the three outer petals as elongated, teardrop-shaped petals radiating outward from the center. The tips of the petals should curl slightly downward.

Step 3: Add the standards Inside the outer petals, draw the three smaller, upright petals. These inner petals are typically more slender and stand upright. Draw them as curved lines, slightly narrower at the base and broader at the tips.

Step 4: Create the sepals Beneath the petals, draw three elongated, pointed oval shapes. These are the sepals of the iris flower. They should be slightly longer than the petals and extend below them.

Step 5: Draw the stem and leaves Extend a stem from the base of the sepals. Draw a few long, narrow leaves along the stem. Iris leaves are usually long and sword-shaped.

Step 6: Add fine details In the center of the iris flower, draw a circle or oval shape to represent the iris's central structure. Around this, add small, delicate lines or dots to depict the iris's distinctive patterns and textures.

Step 7: Ink your drawing Once you are satisfied with your pencil drawing, go over the lines with a fine-tip black pen or marker. This will make your drawing stand out and give it a polished look.

Step 8: Erase pencil lines Carefully erase any remaining pencil lines after the ink has dried. Be gentle to avoid smudging the ink.

Step 9: Add color (optional) Iris flowers come in various colors, so you can use colored pencils or markers to add color to your drawing. Common iris colors include purple, blue, and white. The standards and falls often have contrasting colors.

Step 10: Final touches Inspect your drawing and make any necessary adjustments or touch-ups. Ensure that the ink lines are bold and clean, and add any additional details or shading to make your iris flower drawing more lifelike.

Remember that practice makes perfect, and don't be discouraged if your first iris drawing doesn't turn out exactly as you hoped. Keep practicing, and your skills will improve over time.
